1. You are not alone. There are lots and lots of kids at our school who have parents that are divorced.
2. Divorce is really no one’s fault, but a grown-up decision my parents have made.
3. My parents are not divorcing me, they are divorcing each other.
4. There are good things about divorce like 2 birthday celebrations, more presents, 2 special bedrooms, more toys, more special time with each parent and lots more.
5. Divorce is NOT my fault.
6. If Mom or Dad says something bad about the other one, I can say, “Please don't talk about my mom/dad like that.”
7. It is okay to feel sad, happy, or mad about divorce. I can feel anything I want to feel.
8. If Mom and Dad start arguing, I should go somewhere where I cannot hear them and play a game, listen to music, or watch T.V.
9. My parents are probably not going to get back together so I should not try to do things to make this happen. Even if I am perfectly behaved and keep my room perfectly clean, it will not make my parents get back together. They did not divorce because of me and they will not get back together because of me. It is a GROWN-UP choice, not a kid choice.
10. My parents love me more than anything else in the whole wide world!!
11. Let Mrs. Schmidt know if you ever want to talk about divorce.
